Real-world experience fuels job prospects for alumni like Jacob Friedman

The sports management program at IUPUI takes a unique approach to educating Friedman with dog on ice students in the business side of the sport industry, especially when it comes to sales.

IUPUI is one of the only programs in the country that allows students to get actual sales experience for one of the sport organizations in the city. Jacob Friedman, a senior ticket account executive for the Indy Fuel who graduated from the program in 2016, credited the sales class for helping him realize what he wanted to do in the sport industry.

“The most memorable project I had was our sales class with the Pacers,” Friedman said. “I knew that I wanted to work in sports, but I hadn’t quite decided what would be the best route. This project opened my eyes to the wonderful world of ticket sales.”

Friedman completed his required internship with the Fuel which lead to a full-time job offer, and he has been with them ever since.

“I get to do this a minimum of 36 times a year, and each night is different,” Friedman said about Fuel home games. “The countless hours of phone calls, emails, and meetings during the week pay off once the puck drops.

"I love seeing all of the people having a great time consuming the product that I sold to them—most of them attending their first hockey game.”
